What is Treasure Island?

Treasure Island is an adventure novel by Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson, narrating a tale of "pirates and buried gold". First published as a book in 1883, it was originally serialized in the children's magazine Young Folks between 1881-82 under the title Treasure Island; or, the mutiny of the Hispaniola and the pseudonym Captain George North.

Traditionally considered a coming-of-age story, it is an adventure tale known for its atmosphere, character and action, and also a wry commentary on the ambiguity of morality—as seen in Long John Silver—unusual for children's literature then and now. It is one of the most frequently dramatised of all novels. The influence of Treasure Island on popular perception of pirates is vast, including treasure maps with an "X", schooners, the Black Spot, tropical islands, and one-legged seamen with parrots on their shoulders.[1]

Users can also see the name 'Google' on the doodle. The first letter 'G' can be seen on the pirate, 'O' in compass of the map, 'O' on the mountains, 'G' has been marked on the ship, the flag of the pirates as letter 'L' and the final letter 'E' as the box with the treasure.

Robert Louis Stevenson was born on Nov, 13, 1850 in Scotland. He was essayist, poet, and author of fiction and travel books, known especially for his novels of adventure. Some of his famous works are Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, The Master of Ballantrae, Kidnapped, Prince Otto and Catriona. He died on Dec 3, 1894.
