Gmail is one of the most widely used email clients across the Internet. With its numerous craze in place, spammers/hackers usually try to get hold of one’s Gmail account inorder to grab their personal information such as bank accounts, passwords, personal information etc... And so if you wanted to save your Gmail account from being hacked, make sure that you follow the security checklist mentioned below.
Gmail Security Checklist
- Frequently check for Malwares and viruses in your computer and keep your Anti-virus/security programs up-to date.
- Always upgrade your browser to the newest version whenever available.
- Check for the browser plugins that are trying to access your Gmail account credentials.
- Change your password frequently. Remember that a password should be treated similar to a toothbrush which should be changed every month or so.
- Update your Google account recovery options such as secondary email id and phone number etc...
- Check the websites that are authorized to access your Gmail account and revoke access if not using those services.
- Always use a secure connection while signing in - https://mail.google.com/
- Regularly monitor your last loin activity which can be found at the bottom. If something found unusual, change your password and recovery options immediately.
- Ignore Emails that ask for your account details such as username & password. Gmail or any other service provider will never ever ask for such information. Stay away from such kind of spam mails by reporting them as spam.
- Don't follow links sent to you in a message by clicking it. Instead, right click on the link, copy the link location and then place the URL in a new browser to open it.
- Don't ever share your password with third-party websites as Google will not guarantee your security in such situations.
- Don't let anyone know your account details. If you need to tell it to someone (in rare situations), try to change the password immediately after the need is fulfilled.
- If using a public computer, make sure that the option "Stay signed in" is unchecked.
- Clear entire information (forms, passwords, cookies) immediately after your work is finished while using a public system (internet cafes/library/office etc...).
- And finally, remember to sign out after every session (when your work is completed).
