Buying Guide – Smart TVs

When buying a smart TV, there are many requisites to consider. Our team of experts warn – not to fall for the marketing hype and spend your money on a wrong choice. If you want to really buy the best then you have to understand the following factors…

1. Screen Type:

This is by far the most important aspect of the smart TV.  There are different screen types – LCD, LED, Plasma, and OLED.

1. LCD or Liquid Crystal Display:

LCD TV’s work based on CCFL technology which means that inside the TV there is a flat panel which either blocks or passes the light. The segmented panel present in it contains liquid crystals in blocks which are responsible for picture quality and color. LCD smart TV’s don’t produce light, actually they pass it. This is the reason why a florescent bulb is attached to the back of panel. The picture displayed is actually created by the bulb.

Some of the LCD TV’s use a different technology which is called quantum dots that is stimulated by the HDR requirements in order to produce a wide array of colors and more brightness. Beware as some brands typically fake with confusing labels as QLED. This terms states quantum-dot LCD’s and should not be mistaken with OLED.

Generally, LCD’s weight a lot more than LEDs and a lot cheaper as well. If you want to a smart TV within budget then this might be perfect choice.

2. LED

LED TV’s are just upgraded versions of LCD. In LCD’s, fluorescent bulb is used but in LED’s a light emitting diode is used instead of it. There are two different types of LED’s – Back lit LED and Edge lit LED.

  • Back Lit LED: In this type of TV’s, the LED’s are arranged in an array behind the screen. This type of arrangement helps in highlighting specific areas in brightness and darkness. The picture quality is excellent in this type of LED’s.
  • Edge Lit LED: In this type, the LED’s are arranged in an array around the TV frame which typically light onto the center of the screen. This feature makes it possible for the TV to be slim. This quality is a bit less than the Back lit LED.

When compared to Edge Slim LED’s, Back Lit LED’s are not as slim as them and are usually on pricier end.

3. Plasma TV:

Plasma TV’s are considered the best among the available options in smart TVs. This type of TVs have gases injected in between two glasses which is typically sealed in the form of plasma. When the plasma is connected with electricity, it will react and illuminate the pixels which are usually scattered across the screen.

Plasma TVs have the best picture quality, wider viewing angle, superb contrast and doesn’t cause motion blur. Due to an emissive panel, every pixel is self-illuminated. In some situations, it can switch off some pixels in order to get perfect blacks and more accurate color reproduction.

These type of TV’s also don’t have issues like light bleeding and refresh rates. However, they are not suitable for brightly lit rooms and higher altitudes because they consume more electricity than LCDs and LEDs.

4. OLED TV:

In the future, the OLEDs will take on the television market completely. They are much better in terms of quality, slim and thin any TV in the market. Instead of back light, OLED’s use a layer of LED’s which are controlled at pixel level in order to achieve stunning levels of contrast. These panels can shits off certain pixels in order to achieve perfect blacks just like plasma. This is the reason, the viewing angles, colors and refresh rate are much better than any other TV. As of now, there are only few companies offering OLED TVs.

2. Resolution

Resolution refers to the sharpness of a TV picture which is usually calculated in terms of horizontal lines of pixels.

  • 4K or Ultra HD: It is one of the latest versions of the resolution. It has approximately 4000 pixels that is why it is called 4K. The ultra HD version has 3840 x 2160 pixels. It is 4 times higher when compared to full HD which is the reason why it’s detailing is much better.
  • Full HD or 1080p: Most of the TVs available in the market have Full HD resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels). Though the picture quality is much better than HD ready but less than Ultra HD.
  • HD ready or 720 P: HD ready has a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. For HD ready or 720p, a small sized room is much enough. However, it may not be suitable while watching high quality formats like BluRay.

3. Screen Size

The screen size should be considered depending the size of the room. However in India, but overrides this equation. So, it is better to get the highest screen size based on your budget. However, if you want to go with room size equation then here’s how you have to calculate it.

The formula – Take the distance between the sitting area and TV (in inches), and divide it by 1.5. The result is the screen size you have to take.

For example, if the distance from the TV and where to sit to watch it is 40 inches. By diving it with 1.5 (40/1.5 = 66), then 66 inches is the ideal screen size of the TV.

4. Picture Quality

Even it is very smart, if the picture quality is not up to the mark then the TV is a just a dumb box. Features you have to consider while checking the picture quality are – color reproduction, contrast radio and refresh rate.

1. Contrast Radio

When it comes to picture quality, contrast ration is the factor you have to consider. Contrast ration is referred to the distance between the brightest and darkest image produced by a Television. If contrast factors is not good enough then the picture will appear whitewashed or faded. On contrary, a good contrast ratio will generate clear and amazing picture quality.

2. Color Reproduction

Color reproduction is referred to the ability of the television to produce lively and pleasant pictures. Color gamut is where the TV can produce full-color space. OLED’s and LED’s are capable pf reproducing finest colors.

3. Refresh Rate

Refresh rate represents to the image changing rate on the screen. 60 times per second or 60 Hz is the average refresh rate. But in some rapidly refreshing objects, this rate can make the picture jittery or blurry. This is especially true in HDTVs. In order to provide a solid picture, manufacturers doubled the average 60 Hz to 120 Hz and in some TV’s, it is even up to 240 Hz.

As there aren’t always that many images per second to refresh in the original video content, TVs handle the refresh rate in two different ways. In one method, black images are inserted in between the images in order to make them less blurry and more solid pictures. Another technique includes generating and inserting new images which will show a state of movement between the adjacent pictures in order to display more realistic-looking motion.

Note: Be aware of terms like effective refresh rate while purchasing a TV. Because it actually means the refresh rate is half of the given on the label. For example: 120 Hz effective refresh rate actually means 60 Hz.

5. Connectivity

Unless, you just want a set up box connection, having more connectivity options is a very important aspect to look out for. There are different connectivity options which we will describe in detail below.

1. HDMI or High Definition Multimedia Interface

This type of interface generates a better picture quality than AV media cables and standard definition video cables. Because there will no loss of data while transmitting through this interface. Make sure the smart TV you choose has at least 2 of them.

2. USB or Universal Serial Bus

With the help of USB, you can connect your smart TV with internet dongle, hard disk, pend drive, hard drive, digital cameras and other devices. However, TVs don’t support all types of formats available. So, make sure to check which formats does your TV support?

3. Wi-Fi:

With Wi-Fi compatibility, you can connect the smart TV with internet and home network. Most of the Mid and High end smart TV’s have this amazing feature. So, with this feature you can stream online videos or movies from your TV.

4. Ethernet

An Ethernet cable is helpful in connecting the smart TV with home’s broadband network. So, when connected, you can enjoy listening music, watching movies, regular internet surfing and even browse data in other devices that are connected to this network.

5. VGA Port

If you want to connect your laptop to TV then VGA port is helpful. Though it provides high resolution images, it is only capable of supporting analog signals. Now-a-days VGA technology has become outdated and rarely seen.

6. Optical (To SLINK)

SLINK is the most common and widely used consumer audio equipment now-a-days. With this, you can connect your TV with gaming consoles, DVD recorders, computers and others.

7. NFC or Near Field Communication

With this technology, you can establish a wireless connection between any compatible devices using a radio signal. It only works for a certain distance. This is advance feature so you can only get them in high-end smart TV’s.
