How to Open .docx/xlsx/pptx files in MS Office (2003/XP/2010)?
Opening documents saved in formats like .docx, .xlsx, .pptx in old versions of MS Office (2003 or older) has become a big problem these days. It is because the formats used in the latest MS Office 2010 & later versions are different from the formats used in the MS Office 2003 & older versions.
The default extensions used in MS office (98 / 2k / XP / 2k3) look like,
- .doc for office word
- .xls for office excel
- .ppt for office power point
However, Office 2007 and Office 2010 will use the extensions that look like,
- .docx for office word (2007 / 2010)
- .xlsx for office excel (2007 / 2010)
- .pptx for office power point (2007 / 2010)
So if a file is saved using the latest versions of Microsoft Office (2007 & 2010), then it will use the extensions (.docs/.xlsx/.pptx) that is incompatible with the oldest versions of Office ( 2000 / XP / 2003).
