In India, lakhs of mobiles are being either lost or stolen each day and only a few people are having the information on how to trace the stolen mobile phone. Rest of the people are ignoring it and making up their mind to purchase another Smartphone.
What if you’re using a premium Smartphone? What if your mobile contains valuable information that you don’t want others to get hold off? Will you ignore the theft? Absolutely Not! Right? So, in this article, I am going to discuss a few tips that can help you to block mobile with IMEI number or recover the lost/stolen mobile phone in India.
How & Where to Find the IMEI Number?
Each and every mobile phone will have a unique IMEI number (International mobile equipment identification) which could be used in situations like mobile theft. As the IMEI number is not SIM card dependent, you can easily catch hold of your mobile even though the SIM card has been replaced.
In Order to find your mobile’s IMEI number, simply dial *#06# and note down your IMEI number for future reference. If you forget to write down your mobile’s IMEI beforehand, then don’t worry! It can also be found on the backside of the box in which the mobile was packed when you first purchased it.
How to Block a Mobile Using IMEI Number?
- First, approach your nearest police station and lodge a complaint about your missing/lost mobile phone. They use the IMEI tracker technology to locate the mobile. However, in certain cases, it may not be possible for the officers to trace out your mobile and in that case, please proceed to Step 2.
Note: Remember to block your IMEI number only after the police have failed to locate the mobile and not before that.
- Contact your mobile network provider (call the customer care) and ask them to block your mobile number using the IMEI number. (Note that you need to provide a proof/copy of your police complaint and additional identities if necessary. ref to step 1)
- Once you’ve provided the required documents, your network operator will then block your mobile using IMEI number.
Also, do remember that blocking the IMEI number from a particular network will also block the number from other mobile networks as they use the shared service.
Now even if the thief has changed the SIM card, he won’t be able to use the mobile phone or access your valuable information like credit card details, banking and personal info.
Ex: If you block the IMEI number by calling to Airtel customer care, it will automatically be blocked in Vodafone, Idea, BSNL, Jio 4G etc…
How to Track Lost or Stolen Mobile Phone?
In addition to filing an FIR and seeking the help of police officials, you may also use the Android Device Manager app to locate your mobile phone. Using the lock PIN, you can also erase all the data on your phone wirelessly using the web application.
However, this app works only if the user who stole your device connects to the Internet from the phone.
Additionally, you may also use the Track IMEI service to locate your lost mobile – http://www.trackimei.com/
